Before taking that refresher course in Hitchcock or Kurosawa on one of the Metrograph Theater‘s two screens, consider swinging by the second-floor Commissary, a restaurant and bar designed to evoke the Old Hollywood joints where stars would wine and dine with producers, directors, and crewmembers. Standard bistro fare (steak tartare, duck breast, endive salad) is the focal point, though American comfort foods (macaroni and cheese, smoked salmon, Waldorf salad) are worked in for good measure. The dining room’s blue-velvet curtains, potted palms, and orange-leather banquettes set a darkly glamorous mood, which extends to the Commissary’s lobby bar and private dining room. An evening menu (burgers, omelettes, banana split) runs from Thursday to Saturday until 2 a.m., while a “Writer’s Menu” (negroni cocktails, crafts beers, healthy appetizers) is available daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
