One of the last true independent booksellers in New York City, McNally Jackson was opened in 2004 by Sarah McNally, a former editor at Basic Books whose parents once owned a popular bookstore chain in Canada. This two-floor space has, at any given time, about 55,000 volumes on display, and boasts an impressive selection of magazines, independent periodicals, art journals, and stationery. McNally Jackson also prints hundreds of self-published titles a month, and is known to attract crowds for its literary events. Most of these take place in the much-written-about café space, whose curved wall of open-spine books has the kinetic looks of fluttering pages. If you’re staying in Brooklyn and can’t make it to the Prince Street location, make sure to visit McNally Jackson’s sister outpost in Williamsburg.
