Described by Elle magazine as “the most beautiful hotel in the world,” the five-star, 88-room Greenwich Hotel is the combined effort of Robert De Niro, Ira Drukier, Richard Born (of BD Hotels), and Raphael De Niro (Robert’s son). An imposing building of brick, wrought iron, and leaded glass, the hotel is a marvel of artisanal design, running the international gamut of décor styles, from Tibetan to Moroccan. Exposed oak beams, antique wood floors, Moroccan tile, and Carrara marble are integrated throughout the rooms, many of which offer views of the Tuscan-style courtyard. The Shibui Spa includes a lantern-lit swimming pool open only to guests, and a restaurant named Locanda Verde serves trattoria-style fare by chef Andrew Carmellini. The hotel’s 6,800-square-foot penthouse, christened “The Tribeca,” was imagined by Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt and Japanese architect Tatsuro Miki, and aims to fuse the neighborhood’s industrial roots with the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi. (Even if you only make it to the lobby, keep your eyes peeled for the Robert De Niro Sr. paintings that line the space.)
