Located on the same Chelsea block as the original Barneys store (which closed in 1997), the newly opened Barneys Downtown occupies a sprawling 58,000-square-foot space designed by the award-winning firm Steven Harris Architects. No expense was spared, apparently: the store is complete with mirrored stainless-steel columns, marble walls, brass tables, velvet furniture, and, in a good many places, sumptuous carpeting. As with other Barneys outposts, this one offers both men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, and accessories, plus cosmetics and skincare. However, there are signature twists that set this location apart. They include a marvelous spiral staircase that recalls the Andrée Putman design in the original store, as well as a Blind Barber location for men who prefer a cocktail with their cut, shave, or facial. Even if you’re just here to browse, at least enjoy a pause at the top-floor restaurant, Freds, lined with a Surrealist mural by the artist Conor Thompson.
