Built in 1692 as a Carmelite monastery, San Ángel Inn is among the most historic (and most beautiful) dining spots in the city. Famous figures have walked its halls over the centuries, perhaps stopping to admire the manicured gardens or the central courtyard that today is the restaurant’s most desirable seating area. A superlative waitstaff delivers the Inn’s traditional Mexican fare (crepas de huitlacoche, tortilla soup, fresh sea bass, mole poblano) to white-cloth tables that often accommodate large groups and parties. Located near the historic home of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, there’s no dinner locale more gorgeous after a day of sightseeing. (Don’t forget to start with the house margarita, rumored to be one of the best in the world.) Reservations are recommended to ensure a seat outside.
