Established in 2012 by Esther Kim Varet, Various Small Fires (known as VSF) is a socially and environmentally conscious contemporary art gallery representing emerging, mid-, and late-career artists. Past exhibitions have been devoted to Judith Linhares, Jesper Lust, Josh Kline, and Kirsten Braetsch, and 80 percent of the currently represented artists are women. VSF’s 5,000-square-foot space, designed by Johnston Marklee, includes a one-of-a-kind sound corridor for audio programming and an outdoor gallery for large-scale sculptures and installations; the building itself runs entirely on solar energy.
