Housed in a 20,000-square-foot Michael Maltzan-designed space on Santa Monica Boulevard, Regen Project is a destination art gallery representing the who’s-who of international contemporary artists, from Matthew Barney and Anish Kapoor to Marilyn Minter and Wolfgang Tillmans. Founded by the late Stuart Regen and his surviving wife, Shaun Caley Regen, in 1989 on North Altmont Drive as the Stuart Regen Gallery, the space was the first to present a solo exhibition by Barney, and over the years has devoted itself to single-artist exhibitions from the likes of Glenn Ligon, Lari Pittman, Doug Aitken, Rachel Harrison, Andrea Zittel, and Charles Ray (his sculpture Hinoki debuted at the gallery). Shaun moved the operation to Santa Monica Boulevard in 2012 and continues to run it.
