Built in 1947, and originally known as the Malibu Riviera, the Native Hotel is present-day result of an extensive modern makeover of the original motel structure, which once accommodated such Old Hollywood icons as James Dean and Marilyn Monroe. The Native’s thirteen rooms, designed by the L.A. firm Folklor, have been pared back to the bare essentials—a cozy bed, modern furniture, and a touch of local artwork. Though television, and even air-conditioning, aren’t in the Native’s no-frills vocabulary, all is forgiven due to the hotel’s proximity to the beach and the surrounding, hikeable Malibu Hills.
